Finally after such an amazing demand for my precious appliqué, I am so pleased to present to you Sleepy Ellis!

But first, let me reveal its inspiration…I originally designed my elephant appliqué for a friend's baby gift set. She loved elephants, so I was up for the challenge. Although, baby gifts were a first for me, I could not resist. This is what I created for her two years ago. The elephant appliqués were my design, which I think paired perfectly with my cheerful collection.

I just fell in love with the basketweave stitch! Isn't it just exquisite? Being an advanced beginner myself, I was excited to experiment with this sexy stitch. It was smooth and simple in its undertaking, yet its interwoven impression radiated its sophistication, which my passion yearned for. In my early crochet adventures, I didn't know much about creating my own patterns. No to mention, how intricate and overwhelming they seemed. Yet, I dared myself to design, Ellis the elephant! I had written what I thought at the time were some detailed and correct instructions; however, while trying to recreate Ellis I quickly realized that my math was way off! So, with some reworking and rewording, I finally have my Sleepy Ellis completed. I am very proud of this little guy. He is my first creation of its kind. So today, I would love to share my new pattern with you, and I hope our love for him is mutual! :) So without further ado … The Pattern!

SPECIAL NOTES

Join unless stated otherwise
This pattern is worked in rounds with turning your work, by alternating right side to wrong side with each round to work in opposite directions.
You must know how to crochet and know the basic crochet stitches, such as single crochet, half double crochet, slip stitch and crab stitch to use this pattern.
You must know how to double threat a needle and whip stitch.

(1) Trunk Hexagon Face

Start with mc, or colour of choice and shape into a magic circle.

Rnd 1: Work 5sc in circle, join with sl st into beg st, pull gently on yarn to close circle. Ch1, do NOT turn (5st)

Rnd 15: Cs or Rsc, starting second st right side of hook and into each st to end, sl st in beg st on wrong side to secure.

Fasten off with 6” tail and weave in end. Tuck in the tip of trunk and shape. Sew trunk to bottom of hexagon face. [see picture for placement]

Rnd 6: Cs or rsc around to end and sl st on wrong side to secure. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

(3) Assembly

	Ear Assembly: Step 1: Lay face on top of ears, stretch ears to top and bottom of face area as shown on picture, pin ears to the desired location.
	Attaching Ear 1: using mc yarn Step 2: On the backside of face area, stretch the ear and sew in place. Fasten off on backside and weave in ends.
Attaching Ear 2: using mc yarn Step 3: Fold face in half and verify ear placement; make sure ears are lined up and adjust, if necessary. Attach remaining ear.
Eyes, make 2: using black yarn Step 4: Double thread yarn needle. From the backside, insert needle through to the right side corner of the trunk and pull needle through. Whip stitch about 1 cm long (about 3 or 4 times, bottom to top) forming a ball. Make sure thread is loose. (If thread is tight, gently insert needle under thread ball and pull up slightly to loosen.) Fasten off backside and weave in ends. Repeat for the second eye.
	Eyelashes: using mc yarn Step 5: Double thread yarn needle. Insert needle from backside through to the top right corner of right eye. Twist needle slightly, as to twist both pieces of yarn together and insert needle in the top left corner of the same eye. Insert needle through to the backside again, re-entering in top right corner of the left eye. Twist the needle slightly again, insert needle in top left corner of left eye, through to the backside. Pull and shape, so the thread is not too tight. Fasten off backside and weave in ends.
